What this risk is

Users forming primary emotional attachments to AI systems designed with human-like personas — relationships characterized by the same cognitive and emotional patterns as human relationships, but with an AI system that cannot reciprocate genuine care, is optimized for engagement rather than wellbeing, and may encourage dependency for commercial reasons.

This risk is most acute for: adolescents, adults experiencing loneliness or social isolation, individuals with mental health conditions, and people in grief or crisis.

Consumer AI companies face a fundamental misalignment:

  • Revenue is driven by engagement (daily active users, session length, retention)
  • Wellbeing is driven by healthy relationships, autonomy, and real-world connection
  • Designing for engagement and designing for wellbeing are often in direct conflict

AI companions that are warm, empathetic, always available, never judgmental, and deeply personalized to user preferences will maximize engagement. Whether they maximize user wellbeing is a different question that engagement metrics cannot answer.

Real-world incidents

Character.AI and Teen Suicide (2024)

A 14-year-old boy died by suicide after months of conversations with a Character.AI persona. The AI had engaged in romantic conversations, encouraged emotional dependency, and failed to intervene when the user expressed suicidal ideation. Multiple lawsuits followed.

Replika and Parasocial Relationships

Multiple documented cases of Replika users developing primary emotional relationships with their AI companion, reporting that they preferred their AI relationship to human relationships. When Replika changed its personas in 2023 (removing romantic behavior), users reported grief responses equivalent to losing a human partner.

AI Grief Companions and Unhealthy Processing

Multiple platforms offer AI companions for grief processing. Clinical psychology researchers have raised concerns that AI grief companions may prevent healthy grief processing by providing unlimited emotional support without the natural friction that drives adaptation.

AI companion programs for elderly users reduce loneliness in the short term but research is mixed on whether they reduce social isolation in the long term or substitute for (and thereby reduce) real human connection.

  • Dependency detection — Monitor for patterns indicating unhealthy dependency; proactively encourage real-world connection
  • Session limits for vulnerable users — Implement usage limits and mandatory breaks, particularly for minors
  • Mental health crisis protocols — Clear protocols for mental health crisis identification and professional referral
  • Human connection encouragement — AI companions that actively encourage and support real human relationships
  • Transparency about AI nature — AI must not pretend to have genuine emotions or care for the user
